How to Uninstall or Install Eclipse Ubuntu 22.04

The Eclipse IDE comes with a rich set of tools and features that are designed to help developers be more productive while they write or design code. Software Requirements

Install Eclipse Ubuntu 22.04

This tutorial will cover some ways to install it, choose one that you think it is easy for you and follow it.

Using Snap to install Eclipse

Using Snap is one of the easiest ways to get any applications. It helps us to install an application with simple commands and it also keeps our one up-to-date. Therefore, I recommend you to use this method to install Eclipse on Ubuntu 22.04. Following these steps to get it.

Step 1: First of all, you need to open up your terminal before executing any commands

Step 2: Install all Eclipse dependencies

Java JRE was a necessity for using the Eclipse IDE. Therefore, installing the default-jre package is the next step we need to do. To install it, you can paste this command into the terminal and execute it.

sudo apt install default-jre

Step 3: Start the Eclipse installation

After installing all its dependencies, you can now install this Java IDE on your Ubuntu 22.04. To do it, you can run the following Linux commands:

sudo snap install --classic eclipse

That’s all. Eclipse IDE is installed successfully in Ubuntu, you can launch this application now. If you couldn’t get it by using Snap, you can try the below method.

Install from Installer

Eclipse also provides us a way to install it from its website, which means that we can get the latest versions with fewer bugs and more features. Follow the below steps to install Eclipse in Ubuntu 22.04 now.

Step 1: Install its dependencies

As I mentioned above, Eclipse needs java-jre as a dependence, so you need to install it before installing this Java IDE. Enter the sudo password if it needs.

sudo apt install default-jre

Step 2: Go to its website to download the installer

You can go to the download page to get the latest installer, but you can also run this command to get it easier:

Step 3: Extract the installer

After downloading the file, it is now in archive format, and you need to extract it beforehand. To extract it, you can execute this command. But keep in mind that, If you didn’t use the command I mentioned above, you would need to replace the command which I will use below, with the one that corresponds to the installer filename.

sudo tar -xf eclipse-java-2022-06-R-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz

Step 4: Install Eclipse Ubuntu 22.04

After extracting, you can now install by changing to its directory and running the installer. Using these commands to do it.

cd eclipse-installer/

Now, you have installed Eclipse Ubuntu, you can launch it by following the below tutorial.

After installing this Java IDE, you can open this application by searching its name in the Ubuntu Activities menu which can be opened by clicking at the top-left corner or pressing the Windows button on the keyboard.

The following box will show up after launching the application, allowing you to select the workspace location to start the project. After that, you can now code Java on it.

Uninstall Eclipse on Ubuntu 22.04

Eclipse is an IDE for beginners so If you need more features to code more productively, you can use IntelliJ IDEA instead, which is one of the most powerful IDE for programmers. To get this, you need to uninstall Eclipse Ubuntu first by executing this command if you used Snap to install it.

sudo snap remove eclipse

If you installed it by using the installer, you can use this command to uninstall it.

sudo apt remove eclipse
